smoke screen
March 3 - 21, 2004

At Wagner Rosenbaum Gallery
169 King st, East, Toronto Ontario

tomolennon is an artist who depicts the loneliness of city life. He focuses on sadness; in his work he creates melancholic characters of the city that project their minds. He uses unique techniques; warm tones of pastels speak to you softly and may induce the comfort of sleepiness. Everyone lives side-by- side loneliness, and his work is an appropriate companion while spending time alone.

Concept of gSmoke Screenh

At a late night cafe, she smokes and smokes, surrounded by this ephemeral mist. `I could talk to her, but I decided on a table away from her observing her profile`.

Humans are creatures that love loneliness; it is not a bad thing to go out downtown with friends after finishing the 9 to 5 routine, however, we long for spending time at night like this woman in the cafe. She does not have to drink, she only needs some caffeine and to be surrounded by smoke; she then converses with the inner-self. It's hard for others to talk with this person. She looks like an actress on the screen, surrounded by this blue-white hazec `And I became the audience that quietly watches her performance.`

A completely self-taught artist, tomolennon is originally from Japan and has been living in Toronto, Canada since 1999. He has exhibited his works overseas, in Canada and Japan. He was presented with the Best Artist -award from NOW Magazine in 2002 and EYE Magazine in 2003 as the best local visual artist of the year.
